Future-Proofing the Next Generation of Geoscientists: Satarla is Proud to Sponsor Time for Geography’s Careers Initiative

At Satarla, we recognise that building a sustainable future depends on the next generation of geoscientists, geographers, and environmental specialists. That’s why we are proud to be a partner and sponsor for the launch of Time for Geography’s careers intervention, the UK’s largest ever initiative to raise awareness of careers in geography, geoscience, and the environmental sectors.

Every day, our work at Satarla involves helping organisations make smarter, more sustainable decisions in raw materials and natural resources through risk management techniques. By supporting this programme, we can help to inspire young people to see themselves as part of the solution to global challenges such as climate change, the energy transition, and sustainable resource use.

With more students than ever before choosing geography at GCSE, A-level, and university, the UK has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to repair and future-proof the talent pipeline. Yet despite record numbers in classrooms, industries are facing severe skills shortages at the very moment when expertise in sustainability, resource management, and decision-making is most urgently needed.

The Time for Geography careers initiative addresses this gap head-on. Developed over the past year, it will:

  • Broadcast inspiring video messages from industry leaders directly into thousands of secondary school classrooms.
  • Launch a new geo-careers explorer portal, linking career opportunities to partner university programmes.
  • Equip teachers nationwide with a definitive careers pack to showcase opportunities in geography during subject options evenings.
  • Pilot UKRI-supported workshops in Scotland to engage pupils from minority ethnic and disadvantaged backgrounds, with national rollout planned for 2026.

As Dr Rob Parker, Platform Director at Time for Geography, explains:

“Geography is now the primary gateway into the UK’s geoscience talent pool, but careers awareness has lagged behind student enthusiasm. This intervention ensures that today’s students can see the direct pathways from their studies into the industries shaping the future of our planet.”

This comes at a pivotal moment: while the UK’s teenage population is set to decline, demand for geoscience and environmental expertise continues to rise. Without action, the skills crisis will only deepen.

By supporting this initiative, Satarla is helping ensure that today’s students are equipped, inspired, and ready to become tomorrow’s sustainability leaders.
